Thank You & Goodbye

“We recognise these as a photograph of a drawing of a photograph. The process of making a drawing out of a non-traditional medium and photographing it has become central to my work. I am making a conceptual equivalence between ‘celebrity’ and commercial products. It can be argued that public figures are corporate creations, and or, disposable commodities intended for mass consumption. Similar to the mediums in which I create their portraits. These are manufactured products, sold in mass for public consumption.”

Nathan’s choice of subjects for this ‘British’ series is strategic; they are ready made icons, each representing absolute power in their own field. The scale and repetition overwhelms the viewer, confusing their gaze through multiple imagery, consequently emphasising the concept of society and out consumption of celebrity imagery. However, does this overexploitation of one’s image, contradict its initial purpose?
